Universal Title, a title company headquartered in Alexandria, Va., settled allegations of illicit kickback schemes brought by the Washington, D.C., Office of the Attorney General. The company agreed to pay $500,000 to resolve the issue.
This settlement comes just months after the same AG office announced four settlements with title companies related to their agent-owned joint ventures and affiliated business arrangements. The AG’s office claimed the companies were violating portions of the district’s insurance code, as well as its Consumer Protections Procedures Act.
In a statement, Universal Title denied all accusations of illegal activity, but the costs and time that comes with defending against such claims drove them to settle.
