The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) granted $16.1 million to assist homeless veterans in securing permanent housing.
Over 70 public housing agencies received these funds to provide HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers. The top five recipients who received the largest amount of funds were the Housing Authority for the County of Contra Costa in California ($2,107,886); the Sarasota Housing Authority in Florida ($1,262,250); the Housing Authority of the City of Reno in Nevada ($963,720); the Spokane Housing Authority in Washington ($795,165); and the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino in California ($753,434).
“HUD is excited to award new HUD-VASH vouchers to 71 public housing agencies across the country to address homelessness among veterans,” HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said. “These vouchers will help us get homeless veterans and their families off the streets and into affordable housing. This investment represents our commitment to making veteran homelessness a thing of the past.”
The efforts of these two agencies have led to the most significant decline in veterans experiencing homelessness in over five years. The vouchers offered through the HUD-VASH program provides housing as well as supportive services to veterans through rental assistance via HUD and case management and clinical services provided by the VA.
