The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced it will allocate $685 million in COVID-19 relief funding to help low-income Americans living in public housing.
The money, made available by the CARES Act, will be awarded to Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) across the country.
“The work of public housing authorities has never been more important than today,” Public and Indian Housing Assistant Secretary Hunter Kurtz said in a news release. “Ensuring housing is one of the easiest ways to combat the virus, and this funding will assist PHAs with that mission.”
The money can be used to prepare, prevent and respond for a coronavirus outbreak, including buying personal protective equipment for PHA staff, childcare costs for residents and staff performing essential functions and travel costs to receive testing.
