The National Association of Realtors (NAR) installed its president-elect effective immediately after the resignation of its current president Kenny Parcell. Tracy Kasper, NAR’s new president, said the organization will work toward changes in culture and providing a safe and respectful workplace.
The change in leadership occurred last week after The New York Times published an article about sexual harassment claims against Parcell. The coverage detailed accusations from NAR staff and members, not just about Parcell’s alleged conduct but about a work culture that made them hesitant to callout the harassment.
NAR CEO Bob Goldberg apologized to the organization’s 350 full-time staff in a call on Aug. 28. In a follow-up memo, he stated NAR is committed to rebuilding trust with its employees and addressing the concerns that have arisen.
“We recognize there is lots of concern, anger and disappointment, and we want to acknowledge the people who have come forward and shared their stories and those of you who have shared your perspective over the past few days,” Kasper said in a statement to NAR members. “We have taken everything we have heard to heart. Our commitment to our staff and our members is unwavering, and we will continue to enhance the way we foster a welcoming, safe and respectful workplace.
“We will work to ensure the relationship between staff and members acknowledges not only staff expertise but also their commitment to the association, in addition to the members. The Culture Presidential Advisory Group we announced is one step forward in that. Bob Goldberg and his team also will be working in parallel with staff on their own culture council. We are looking to make lasting and positive change and to do so as quickly as possible.”
Kasper also stated it was important to take this moment to learn and focus on building a better culture at the organization, one that when an issue arises, staff and members feel they are able to speak up.
“This is a really hard time for our association,” she said. “But I know this is an opportunity to really listen and grow together. As your president, I take the responsibility of rebuilding very seriously. Know I’m here for you, as is the entire leadership team, and we will get through this together.”
Kasper, from Boise, Idaho, has 30 years of real estate experience. NAR stated she intends to broaden the scope of members’ community leadership while she is president, including installing Realtors in high schools to promote financial literacy and homeownership preparedness.
